What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is swelling, usually in the arms or legs that occurs as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. A lymphatic system can become impaired in a number of ways: by surgery, radiation, injury or even infection. It can also be congenital and surface in the early years.

It occurs when the protein-rich lymphatic fluid backs up into an area of the body. If untreated, it can result in an infection (cellulitis) and eventually fibrosis (hardened tissue).

If lymph nodes are removed or if you have experienced radiation, you will be at risk for developing lymphedema. In some people, swelling starts immediately after surgery or radiation. In others, it may not occur until years later.
